The Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica is home to thriving ecosystems of penguins, seals, whales, krill, and an astonishing array of underwater life.

In 2016, a large marine protected area (MPA) was established in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica to protect these magnificent and relatively undisturbed areas.

However, Antarctica’s Southern Ocean has many other regions that are still in need of protection.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are the best way to protect biodiversity and ecosystems.

They also improve the ocean’s resilience to the increasing impacts of climate change.

The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) wants to see a network of MPAs established in East Antarctica, the Weddell Sea, and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Protecting the Southern Ocean with MPAs ensures that the southern polar regions stay wild and wonderful for generations to come.
